Maytree Foundation: Assisting Local Leaders with Immigrants Employment Strategies

The Maytree Foundation has recently set up a project named Assisting Local Leaders with Immigrants Employment Strategies (ALLIES). ALLIES objective is to create strategies that connect small business owners with skilled immigrant workers in Canada.

Canada welcomes approximately 250,000 immigrants each year; 30% of foreigners that settle in large Canadian cities have a bachelor degree. However, only one in four of them find jobs relevant to their education and work experiences.

In Canada, SME’s are responsible for hiring 64% of private sector workers. SME’s often lack the resources necessary for recruiting immigrants. Additionally, employing immigrants is often perceived as being much riskier than hiring Canadian citizens due to the discrepancies in cultures, values and experiences.

Although there are some risks associated in hiring new immigrants many SME’s have begun to appreciate the benefits associated to this practice. Immigrants can greatly facilitate a business’ international expansion with the help of their overseas connections and language abilities.

Canadian employers frequently do not hire new immigrants; they are often discouraged because of the risks involved. However, online resources have greatly facilitated recruiting for business owners as it makes international reference checking much simpler. Furthermore, it does not always occur to immigrants to apply to smaller companies. Newcomers tend to apply to large corporations that they were already familiar with in their home country.

Canadian companies, specifically SME’s tend to hire employees that are knowledgeable in terms of Canadian regulations and standards in order to reduce training efforts. These types of hiring practices greatly hinder the employment of immigrants. Therefore, the Maytree Foundation is trying to enable immigrants to gain relevant work experience in Canada through internships and apprenticeships.

2011 Global Relocation Trends Survey

The 2011 Global Relocation Trends Survey report is the 16th report issued by Brookfield GRS. This issue of the Global Relocation Trends Survey report is based on responses from 118 senior-level human resources professionals from a diverse group of industries and countries. Together they managed a total worldwide employee population of 5.6 million.

The report elicits details pertaining to international assignee demographics, key destinations, challenging destinations, international assignee program management structure, assignment expense management, return on investment, assignment types and policy structures, international assignee selection, localization considerations and practices, international assignee compensation management, repatriation policies, international assignee attrition rates, cross-cultural training, assignment evaluation, and the management of outsourced services.

The 2011 Global Relocation Trends Survey report highlights:

  • 43% of respondents believed the number of international assignees increased in 2010, the first increase since the 2006 report, but still lower than the historical average of 48%.
  • 61% expected the number to increase in 2011, higher than the historical average of 57%.
  • China, Brazil, and India were the primary emerging destinations.
  • While only 5% of respondents reported that the global mobility function reported to talent management, 59% of respondents reported that the mobility function had active links to talent management.
  • In response to economic conditions, 75% of companies reduced assignment expenses. 56% reported increased pressure to reduce costs compared to a year ago — a reduction from 84% in the 2010 report.
  • Critical relocation challenges included assignment costs (15%), finding suitable candidates (12%), career management (12%) and compliance (9%).
  • The top family challenges identified as very critical to companies were partner resistance (47%), family adjustment (32%), children’s education (29%), and location difficulties (25%).
  • 22% of respondents had formal career-management processes for international assignees and 18% of respondents had a formal candidate pool for international assignments.
  • 95% of respondents held repatriation discussions, 74% of companies had written repatriation policies, yet only 14% of companies had a formal repatriation strategy linked to career management and retention.
  • 86% of respondents prepared cost estimates before an assignment and 67% tracked costs during an assignment; on the other hand only 25% of respondents compared estimated with actual costs, the lowest percentage in the history of this report.
  • Only 8% of respondents formally measured return on investment (ROI); 50% of respondents indicated that the principal reason for not measuring ROI is that they do not know how to achieve it.

A Forest in the Middle of Downtown Montreal

The Urban Forest, hosted by the McCord Museum, is a “hidden haven” located on Victoria, a small street near McGill University. The Forest was designed by Paula Meijerink, a landscape architect from the Netherlands who is currently working as a visiting professor for McGill University in the Faculty of Architecture. This project was undertaken by the McCord Museum in order to display its contemporary side.

The Urban Forest is a wonderful destination for children since it is decorated with bright ribbons, log seats and the pavement is covered with polka dots. It is a popular destination for lunch since you can bring your own lunch or eat at McCord`s Café Bistro.

Every day between 12-3 pm several activities such as playing family tree detective or learning about ethnic groups and ancient cultures are offered. The urban Forest will remain open until September 5th.

According to a survey: 41% of Corporate Executives find it difficult to find talent

A recent survey conducted by Deloitte and Forbes states that 41% of corporate executives and talent managers are worried that they will not find talent in global and developing markets. Also, 72% of managers are specifically worried that there will be a shortage of talent in the Research and development industry.

For many these findings are extremely surprising given that even with the extremely high unemployment rates in the US and around the world, companies are still struggling to find skilled workers worldwide. Not only are executives worried about finding talented employees they are also extremely concerned with their companies’ ability to retain talent in the long-run. Furthermore, 80% of the executives that were surveyed believed that their company’s talent programs needed to be greatly improved.

Average February for Canadian home sales

According to statistics released a few days ago by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), national resale housing activity in February 2011 ran close to the five-year average for the month, continuing a theme that has characterized the past four months.

Actual (not seasonally adjusted) national sales activity via the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) Systems of Canadian real estate Boards came in 5.9 per cent below levels reported last February. This marks the smallest year-over-year decline in nine months, and the fourth consecutive month in which sales activity was on par with the five-year average for that month.

Seasonally adjusted home sales activity edged down 1.6 per cent in February 2011 compared to the previous month on a national basis. Sales activity eased in almost two-thirds of all local markets from the previous month, offsetting monthly increases in activity among other markets including Vancouver and Calgary.

Nationally, new listings in February edged up 1.5 per cent from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis, which builds on the 4.3 per cent monthly increase in January. The rise in new listings is consistent with CREA’s expectation that many sellers, who shied away from listing their home last summer when the national housing market softened, would list their home in early 2011, having by now observed improved demand and stable prices.

With both sales activity and new supply little changed in February, the housing market remained firmly in balanced territory. The national sales-to-new listings ratio, a measure of market balance, stood at 53.5 per cent in February. This is little changed from the previous four months.

“Most local housing markets in Canada are well balanced, but there are still a number of buyers’ and sellers’ markets,” said Georges Pahud, CREA’s President. “Housing market trends often evolve and diverge from national trends due to local factors, so buyers and sellers should consult their local REALTOR® to understand how the housing market is shaping up where they live.”

The number of months of inventory represents the number of months it takes to sell current inventory at the current rate of sales activity, and is another measure of the balance between housing supply and demand. The seasonally adjusted number of months of inventory stood at 5.7 months at the end of February on a national basis. This is little changed from the 5.5 months reported in January, when it reached the lowest level since last April.

The national average price for homes sold in February 2011 rose 8.8 per cent year-over-year to $365,192. “The average price has been skewed higher nationally and in British Columbia recently by a record number of multi-million dollar sales in a couple of areas in Greater Vancouver,” said Gregory Klump, CREA’s Chief Economist.

When you take Vancouver out of the equation, the year-over-year increase in the national average price drops to 3.4 per cent,” added Klump. “While that’s still stronger than in the past six months or so, national average price gains may recede after tighter mortgage regulations take effect in March.

CREA cautions that average price information can be useful in establishing trends over time, but does not indicate actual prices in centres comprised of widely divergent neighborhoods or account for price differential between geographic areas. Statistical information contained in this report includes all housing types.

MLS® is a co-operative marketing system used only by Canada’s real estate Boards to ensure maximum exposure of properties listed for sale.

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) is one of Canada’s largest single-industry trade associations, representing more than 100,000 REALTORS® working through more than 100 real estate Boards and Associations.

Mercer’s 2011 Worldwide Cost of Living Survey

The 2011 Worldwide cost of living survey ranks Luanda in Angola as the most expensive city for expatriates. Toronto was ranked 59th, Vancouver 65th, Montreal 79th, Calgary 96th and Ottawa 114th making it the least expensive city to live in Canada .

The Mercer survey takes into account 214 cities across 5 continents and works similarly to the Consumer price index (CPI). It reviews the cost of over 200 items in each city including housing, transport, food, clothing, household, goods and entertainment. It used New York City as the base city and compares the other cities against it, using the US dollar as the base currency. Although it takes a look at over 200 items the cost of housing has the most influence on city ranking as it is usually the largest expense for expatriates.

This kind of survey is extremely important as it is extremely important employers understand the impact of currency fluctuation, inflation, political instability and natural disasters as they greatly influence the cost of living in different cities. Therefore allowing knowledgeable employers to better control costs, retain talented employees and to offer more competitive compensation packages.

Jacques Froissant's 5 tips list: Changes in recruitment since 2.0

Jacques Froissant founded Altaïde (www.Altaide.com), a consulting firm in recruitment and HR management, in the year 2000. A real pioneer of 2.0 hiring, he developed an expertise on all 2.0 web practices (head hunting, recruitment, HR management). Froissant is a famous blogger on all those subjects and on internet habits (blogs, social networks, Facebook, Twitter…) he is regularly invited as an expert on these topics for French medias (L’Express, 01net, conferences…)
We asked him for five tips about the main differences that have been implemented since the arrival of 2.0 recruitment.

E-reputation: The main issue for companies in the 2.0 era is to work on their online brand image. It is very important to be represented on all Social Medias available on the web, to spread the brand through the web. From an HR point of view, it is important to be seeable for people that are seeking for a job and that is the reason why the company should be present in all Social Medias. When you try to get in touch with a potential employee, it is better if they have already seen you online or if they can get the information about your company from online tools.
In order to cope with this challenge, the company has to get connected on all the main social platforms, professional or not.
Different websites are available and should be used: Create a company blog, Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook,Flicker, Youtube… But the main challenge is not to create an account, but to keep it alive, the effect of having a dead profile is worst than having no profile at all. Therefore the HR team has to work to add content on a regular basis as will do a community manager.

Sourcing: The role and the way of sourcing have changed a lot since the arrival of Web 2.0. from the candidate AND from the employer perspectives. From an employer perspective, it is way easier than before to learn about the contact’s profile. Just by googling the name of the candidate, it delivers a lot of information, but also by viewing his LinkedIn, it can help a lot to get to know the person.
From the candidates point of view, we saw on the previous point that he has the possibility to know more about the company in an easier way.

According to Jacques Froissant’s experience at Altaïde, 80% of the sourcing step comes from Social Networks.

What kind of job is concerned: For now it is mainly for internet jobs, medium or senior executives. In France 3 out of 4 HR Managers have already used social medias to hire managers. But for the rest, it is not used that much. According to Jacques Froissant, it is going to change in the future, with applications like “Work for us” on Facebook (that claim to be receiving more than 1000 new companies per month), the habits are shifting. People are more and more able to apply directly on companies’ Facebook pages enabling them to be a candidate for any kind of job (for more information: http://www.facebook.com/WorkForUs)

International head hunting: With the arrival of 2.0, it is also much easier to find international employees for a specific mission. It is without a doubt, the easiest way of hiring. There are a lot of different ways of using that tool. In order to find experts in a specific field, Jacques Froissant does not hesitate to search in Canada to find the profile he was searching for that wasn’t available in France. It is also a way to find people without having them searching yet. For instance, if you are searching for French engineers in the Silicon Valley on LinkedIn, you may find one saying “It is time for me to go back to France” and so you can send him a request without having him asking yet. 2.0 enable a more proactive behavior.
Candidates can also apply spontaneously (like with “Work for us” on Facebook) and use their professional or unprofessional networks.

Limits: There is a limit that needs to be respected, it’s about privacy matters. It is very important that you don’t try to check private pictures and private information about the candidate because it shouldn’t be used for that purpose. Jacques Froissant has signed a French petition about the matter (more information here). Privacy is a issue with Social Networks like Facebook.

Have you already used any social media to hire your employees? What would you advise to use? Do you know any application?

We would like to thank Altaïde and Jacques Froissant, who accepted to deliver the tips from France! We look forward to having you for our next 5 tip-list.

The importance of mentoring skilled immigrants

250,000 immigrants move to Canada each year in search of a better quality of life. Even though these individuals may be highly skilled they still find it extremely challenging to find suitable jobs. This can be attributed to the cultural barriers they must overcome in order to integrate into our North American society.

In order to try to help immigrants overcome these challenges, governments have put into place mentoring programs. These programs allow skilled foreign workers to overcome challenges such as resume building and interview etiquette; allowing them to more easily secure jobs in their area of expertise. Not only are these types of programs beneficial for immigrants they are also extremely valuable for the mentors since they allow them to gain cultural awareness.

Furthermore, with the retirement of baby boomers in the following years, it is expected that there will be a skilled labor shortage. Thus, assisting immigrants to quickly integrate is extremely valuable for our society as a whole.

10 Countries Facing Brain Drain

July 6th 2011 – UniversitiesOnline.com – Brain drain, also known as human capital flight, is a serious issue in many parts of the world, as skilled professionals seek out work abroad rather than returning to work in their home country. Many are driven away by high unemployment, but issues like political oppression, lack of religious freedom and simply not being able to earn a big enough paycheck also play a significant role in exacerbating brain drain. The phenomenon is not only a serious economic issue (both in that the country loses workers and the money it put into training them in college), but one that often puts the health and safety of the nation’s citizens at risk, creating long-term and potentially disastrous results for countries with high brain drain rates spanning several decades.

Here we’ve compiled a list of some of the nations that have been hardest hit by brain drain in that past few years. While some are making progress in reversing the process, others are seeing numbers rise and citizens migrating in larger numbers every year. These nations, often those in the developing world, must make major economic and social changes if they hope to retain their best and most skilled workers over the long term.

Ethiopia:

Ethiopia produces a large number of qualified professionals, especially in the medical field, but is experiencing one of the worst brain drains of any country in the world. Attracted by better prospects overseas and in other African nations and pushed out by political persecution, Ethiopia’s best and brightest haven’t been sticking around after graduation. A recent study presented at the National Symposium on Ethiopian Diasporas revealed some shocking numbers, with the country losing about 75% of its skilled professionals over the past ten years. This exodus of highly qualified professionals has had a huge impact on the country, leaving it with too few physicians, engineers and scientists to fill positions the country desperately needs to thrive economically.

Nigeria:

Nigeria is another African nation that has suffered due to a massive brain drain. With much of Nigeria still essentially a developing nation with unreliable power and few resources, higher level science, engineering and medical professionals often find little to motivate them into staying, especially with job offers from the U.S. and European nations exerting a powerful pull. Since Nigeria’s brutal civil war in late 60s, the country has bounced between military governments and dictatorships, pushing out between 11 and 17 million people. Today, over 2 million Nigerians live in the U.S. alone, and of these about 20,000 are doctors and over 10,000 are academics. That’s a heavy loss for a nation that so desperately needs qualified professionals to rebuild and improve its own resources.

Kenya:

High unemployment rates, lack of resources and other factors have made Kenya one of the top brain drain countries in Africa. With fewer than 30% of Kenyans who study overseas returning to work in Kenya, the nation is feeling the hurt of losing so many skilled professionals. The Kenyan Medical Association has warned that emigration of medical professionals may make it impossible to provide health care to the country’s residents – and the situation is already pretty dire. As of 2002, the public sector medical field had only 600 doctors and 70 dentists available to treat over 28 million citizens. With somewhere between 500,000 and 1.8 million Kenyans working and living overseas, the country is trying desperately to find a way to lure some of these citizens back home where their skills are much needed.

South Africa:

Years of unrest, high crime rates, AIDS and lack of jobs have combined to make South Africa’s brain drain a serious problem. Over the past three years, the country has lost over 100,000 workers, with an additional 70% of skilled South Africans saying they are considering leaving the nation. Losing so many skilled workers has a ripple effect, with the loss of each skilled professional costing about 10 unskilled jobs. Currently, the country is working to not only keep residents from leaving once they’ve completed their training, but to also attract professionals from other nations to South African businesses. Though there is still a long way to go to make this a reality.

Iran:

In 2006, the IMF ranked Iran the highest in brain drain among 90 countries (both developed and less developed), with over 180,000 people leaving each year due to a poor job market and oppressive social conditions. In fact, it is estimated that over 25% of Iranians with post-secondary degrees live and work abroad, adding up to a total of 4 million Iranians living overseas. While the outflux of Iranians was scoffed at in the early 80′s by government officials, today Iran is doing more to keep their skilled professionals at home, creating several national foundations aimed at improving the conditions for students in the sciences and increasing the number of graduate programs. Why pay attention now? Iran’s brain drain is estimated to cost the country over $50 billion each year in economic losses.

China:

China has become a major player in global economics, but despite a rapidly growing job force, it is having trouble hanging on to qualified professionals. Many believe the reason lies in censorship and lack of freedoms (including the one child policy), but whatever the true cause, 70% of Chinese students who study overseas never return to their homeland. Since 1978, over 1 million Chinese students have headed to universities located abroad to get their degrees, yet fewer than 275,000 have returned. In fact, many foreign schools actually work to attract Chinese students, only exacerbating the problem for a nation in need of top scientists and researchers. The Chinese government has worked hard to reverse the trend, providing top-tier students in science and engineering with a large number of incentives, yet the numbers are only growing larger. By the end of this year, the nation could see well over 200,000 students leaving.

Mexico:

Mexican immigration is a big issue in the U.S., with tens of thousands of illegal immigrants crossing U.S. borders each year. Yet a large portion of Mexican immigrants don’t fit this stereotype and are wealthy, well-educated and enter the country quite legally. Mexico is seeing a huge brain drain as more middle- and upper-class citizens move abroad, many who hold higher degrees and work in professional fields like medicine and law. The biggest cause for this is unemployment, with hundreds of thousands of skilled workers unable to find work, though security issues also play a big role. The higher the level of education, the less likely workers are to stay in Mexico, with about 70% of Mexicans with a PhD coming to work in America. The brain drain is worst in the sciences, where 79% of students who come to study in America never return home.

Jamaica:

In a trend common for Caribbean nations, Jamaica faces one of the biggest brain drains in the region. Over 80% of Jamaica’s citizens who’ve obtained higher education live abroad. Most of this migration is due to lack of jobs, as there simply aren’t enough to go around for young graduates from university programs. What makes this loss so striking isn’t just the high percentage, but that Jamaican citizens who choose to work abroad must pay a remittance to the Jamaican government. Even with these additional fees, students aren’t enticed into staying to work in Jamaica. While much attention has been paid to the issue in recent years, little has changed and Jamaica. Along with Haiti, Suriname, Guyana and Grenada are losing between 70-90% of their college-educated force each year.

Malaysia:

The brain drain in Malaysia has been steadily worsening, with the World Bank projecting it to intensify over the next few years. Currently, two out of every ten Malaysians with higher education seeks employment elsewhere, accounting for about 305,000 immigrants in 2009. There are a number of factors that contribute to this mass emigration, including job opportunities, political corruption and lack of religious freedom. Malaysia made big economic strides in the 90s, but growth has been halved in the past decade, slowing from 7.2% to just 4.6%. Experts believe this is largely due to brain drain, and caution that the nation could see serious economic issues if it doesn’t do something more to encourage professionals to work in their home country.

England:

While it isn’t seeing staggering losses like many countries on this list, it is valuable to see how brain drain is a problem even in developed and relatively wealthy nations like Britain. Over the past few years, England has seen a large number of its skilled professionals leaving for work abroad, with over 1.1 million university graduates living and working outside of the country. This accounts for almost 1 in 10 skilled citizens choosing to emigrate. This mass emigration of skilled professionals may have serious ramifications for the British economy, as professionals add to the workforce of nations like Australia, Canada, America, France and Spain rather than at home. When compared to other developed nations, these numbers are especially high, with only Germany coming close in terms of losses (with 860,000 workers lost), making it clear that even top nations with good schools, public health and lots of resources can be subject to brain drain.

This aspect has become more important nowadays when the hiring process is initiated; sometimes there are moments when managing talent is critical, and having an effective system to measure the potential of professionals becomes a necessity, because the war for talent is happening within their own organizations. This is one of the conclusions of the First Meeting of the Employment Observatory Future step, which was held in Madrid with the participation of eight professionals in the management of human resources, “New talent assessment tools”.

One of the participants, was Arantxa Salguero, director of HR MARS, agreed that in these times when the situation requires reduction equipment, it is the human resources department to make sure that people who are the ones that are tailored to the needs and expectations of the company. When looking for talent the processes of selection are more complex, sometimes they have 8 candidates for the same position, having different executives who will evaluate different perspectives. Book: The human face of global mobility

Drawing on the work of a long-standing discussion group at the Center for Comparative and Global Research of UCLAs International Institute, contributions to The Human Face of Global Mobility explore the reality behind assumptions about new global migration trends. Articles challenge widely held views about the elite characteristics of these migrants, the costs and consequences of the brain drain said to follow from the migration of skilled workers, the determinants of national policies on high skilled migrants, and the presumed effortlessness of professional mobility in an integrating world. The volume also sheds new light on international student migration, the politics of temporary, non-immigrant workers in the United States, new international forms of regulating movement, and realities of everyday lives of multinational employees in the worlds transnational cities.

Marie-Eve Ethier's 5 tips list on: How to hire an international employee

Marie-Eve Ethier studied Human Resources Management at HEC Montreal. She worked as an immigration officer at Citizenship and Immigration Canada for almost five years.  She joined Ubisoft Entertainment in 2004 as a recruiter and then as an HR Adviser-Global Mobility. Since 2006, she has been working for Rio Tinto in various positions related to international mobility. She currently holds a Project Manager-Total Rewards and Mobility position.

We asked her for five tips about the things to know when hiring in Canada  a foreign candidate:

  • Labor Market Opinion (LMO): It is an assessment done by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) in order to protect the Canadian Labour Market.  A LMO is required in most cases when you wish to hire foreign workers. Some occupations or categories of workers may be exempt from LMO. A complete list of these occupations is available on HRSDC web site: www.hrsdc.gc.ca.  When applying for a LMO, you must provide various information such as wages, working conditions, efforts made to hire or train Canadians for the job, etc.  You must demonstrate that no Canadian would be qualified enough to perform the job, which would justify the need to hire a foreign worker. Once the LMO is approved, a temporary work permit application can be requested to Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Please note an exception applies if you intend to hire foreign workers in the province of Quebec. In addition to the LMO, a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) must be obtained from the Government of Quebec before submitting a work permit application to Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
  • Work Permit – Eligibility to apply: The temporary work permit application process may differ from one foreign worker to another. There are three possible scenarios: 1) eligibility to apply from outside Canada, 2) eligibility to apply from inside Canada, and 3) eligibility to apply as the foreign worker enters Canada.  Each scenario has it’s own requirements listed at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/apply-who-eligible.asp#enter. It is important to note that in scenarios 1 and 2, the foreign worker may have to provide a police clearance certificate and to undergo a medical examination.  If the foreign worker isn’t already inside Canada, it will be important to verify if his country of citizenship is listed as requiring a temporary resident visa.  If so, a temporary resident visa will need to be requested with the temporary work permit application in a Canadian Embassy or Consulate. The list of countries requiring such visa is available at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visa.asp.
  • Average wait: The waiting time will depend on the province in which you are hiring, and the country of origin of your foreign candidate. An employer will most likely have to wait longer if he wishes to hire in Quebec, if the foreign worker isn’t already in Canada, has a country of citizenship listed as requiring a temporary resident visa and has an occupation non exempt from LMO. The whole process can take many months.
  • Quotas:  Canada doesn’t have any quota in place right now. In a general matter it is a welcoming country for foreigners, as long as you are able to justify why you wish to hire foreign workers instead of Canadians.  Therefore, , it is nothing like the H1B visa in the US.
  • Where to get the information: If you want to know more about the subject and know every step that should be taken, you can go to check the http://www.cic.gc.ca (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) website where you can find all the information. As Canada is a federal state, each province has its own rules, therefore you should check on your province’s website (http://bit.ly/jkdV8L) for Quebec. And do not hesitate to call, you can always contact the Canadian Embassies, immigration offices or the call center services (inside Canada only 1-888-242-2100), they can answer your questions swiftly.

Do you have any issues or had problems hiring an international employee? Share your experience with us!

We would like to thank Rio Tinto and Marie-Eve Ethier, who was kind enough to spend a long time with us explaining all those processes and requirements! We look forward to having you for our next 5 tip-list.

Cirque Du Soleil: Totem show

Even before entering the Grande Chapiteau, there is whimsy and magic in the air. The signature blue and yellow tent of Cirque du Soleil glows in the setting sun, creating an ambiance of electric energy. Hundreds of people line up with bated breath, knowing they are about to see something spectacular: TOTEM…

The lights go down and a hurried silence spreads through the crowd. Chanting beat music swells through the area, and the giant turtle-shaped structure starts to glow. Slowly descending from the sky is a sparkling figure, slowly spinning and glittering in the spotlight. No, this is not an acid flashback. This is Cirque du Soleil’s latest touring show TOTEM. Written and Directed by Robert Lepage, TOTEM takes a journey through the evolution of Man. From primitive form all the way up to the ultimate fantasy of flying.

Montreal infrigement Festival

Celebrating freedom of expression and designed as a real arts democracy, this festival is a critical response to the oppressive neoliberal worldview and all its billboard trucks, televisions, flyers, advertisements, jingles, made-for-TV Wars; and the depoliticisation of people through this diversionary Spectacle.

The infringement welcomes a variety of performances and cultural resistance: theatre groups, performers, street activism, political theatre, musicians, radical performance, visual artists, films, marginalized arts, spoken-word, puppet shows, disadvantaged groups, and anyone wishing to artistically infringe on the monoculture that creeps into every corner of our lives.

The festival aims to emphasize both critical practice in the arts, and artistic practice in activism. It also aims to provide a positive environment that encourages and nurtures critical art.

Welcome to Little ItaLy !

Welcome to Little Italy and appropriately so! Italian Canadians, the largest ethnic group in the Montreal area can generally trace their roots to Little Italy, where many families settled at the end of the 19th century and after World War II.

Little Italy is just North East of the city, a 5 minute drive from downtown and well worth the trip. Today the neighborhood is vibrant and contains more than a few cultural treasures like La Difesa church, opened in 1919 and named after a miracle, which happened in Casacalenda (Campobasso) Italy, in a place called “La Difesa”.

You will be awestruck at the beautiful fresco decorations by painter Guido Nincheri (1885-1973). Visit Dante Park, named after the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, the father of the Italian language, or maybe La Maison d’Italie built in 1936 by architect Patsy Colangelo and is still the heart of many socio-cultural events.

Shopping is a must when in Little Italy, Jean Talon Market really sets the stage, fresh produce stands line walkways with everything from Italian parsley to Calamari (that’s squid). A walk up St. Laurent Blvd. opens up the world of fabulous Italian clothes and shoes. However what is the most important part of visiting Little Italy? You guessed it, the food. What a great selection of restaurants, enjoy everything from a traditional Italian trattorias and cafes to exceptional and elegant Italian dining.

Don’t be surprised if you hear a lot of Italian spoken here!

Ciao.

Narriman Begueret’s 5 tips list about the online tools to find and hire international high skilled professionals

Narriman Begueret studied Psychology in Paris before becoming a headhunter at French firm Eurêka. In 2006, she moved to Montreal and was hired as a Recruiting Consultant by leading IT company CGI’s human resources department. In 2010, she was promoted to the position of Global Mobility Coordinator.

We asked her for five tips on how to recruit international talent:

  • Define a strategy:Almost every company in the world is facing an international talent war! Companies must define exactly what they’re looking for, what they want to say about their brand, and who their target audience is. It is very important that companies develop a fresh and consistent message. Attracting talent is critical to company success, no matter the company size.
  • Use your corporate website: Your corporate website must be the center of your Web strategy: it gives candidates information on your company’s history, values, opportunities and benefits, as well as an idea of the kind of people you are looking for! With enough company visibility, the Internet can be a great hiring tool. As an example, check out CGI’s career page at www.cgi.com/careers.
  • Use multiple tools: According to Narriman, companies need to diversify the places to search for the right candidate. The more places companies search in, the better. By communicating through multiple channels, companies can broaden their search: use places where you look for candidates and others where candidates look for you. It’s a push-pull system between talent and companies. The main idea is to be visible on every tool possible: websites, social media, conferences, job boards, metabrowsers, etc. In addition, companies must define and select technology solutions that will enhance their recruitment process.
  • Attend fairs and conventions:Narriman says that having a stand at conventions and fairs organized by the government and some of its partners (e.g., Destination Canada) can also be a good source of new leads.
  • Help new members integrate: The last tip is to develop processes and tools to help new hires integrate into the company and into their new country. New hires and their families must adapt to a new world and a new culture. The better the support, the sooner the new hire will integrate, feel comfortable, become efficient and add value to the organization.

There are multiple tools online that HR professionals can use to find the perfect candidate. However, Narriman adds that there are many other ways to attract talents, and the ones above are just the main ones. To be successful in international recruitment you must diversify your approaches and be proactive. With the Web, the possibilities are endless, as is the creativity you can use to conduct your search.

What other tool would you recommend? Which one do you use personally?  Share with us your own tips!

We would like to thank CGI and Narriman Begueret for their time. We look forward to having you visit our next five-tip list!

The Outremont Borough

District merged in 2001 at the same time as ten old cities of the island of Montreal, the Outremont borough counts around 24000 inhabitants for a surface of 3,84 km2 ( the smallest district of Montreal city). Interesting fact: Outremont has about the same number of inhabitants since 1930.

The neighbourhood has been traditionally largely inhabited by Francophones, but also by a large number of Hasidic Jews.

Very residential, the Outremont district and borough is well known for the beauty of its imposing old residences as those on Maplewood.

The main socioeconomic variables of the Outremont Borough give you a first portrait of the people who chose to live in this particular borough. Of course, the geographical boundaries of the Montreal Boroughs are man made and have often been modified during the course of history.

Nevertheless, each borough developed its own characteristics, its own personality and its own life. Some may be closer to your preferences than others, and this is fine, but they are all worth discovering.

Montreal in world’s top 10 Waterfront Cities !

The famous website Travel & Leisure posted recently a ranking made by a nonprofit group that promotes community-friendly places, The Project for Public Spaces (PPS). The result: a list of destinations where the waterfront has become (or has always been) a vital place for city residents and tourists to shop, work, and gather. Montreal appears in this ranking between cities like Vanice, San Sebastian or Helsinki…

Here what they said on Montreal :

« When Montreal’s new port facilities opened in the 1970s, an exodus of residents left the old port dark and dangerous. Today, the old city has been reinvented as a design destination and has taken its place as the true heart of Montreal. Tourists beeline to the port, eager to explore the oldest urban area in North America (and eat French food), while locals bike, boat, ice-skate along the port and its canals, and browse the 160-year-old Bonsecours Market. »

To consult the whole Ranking, Visit the Travel & Leisure Website.

Chances are you won’t be able to visit all participating museums so consider picking your top two favorite museum circuits ahead of time or create your own museum circuit.

Montreal Museums Day marks the May 18th celebration of International Museums Day, a 1977 UNESCO/International Council of Museums initiative revolving around the motto that “museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples.”

You can get more information on The Montreal Museum Day Website.

17 May: International Day Against Homophobia in Montreal

Montreal is renowned worldwide for being a gay-friendly place and the city is crowned with the biggest Gay Village in North America. But it hasn’t always been this way.

Montreal’s queer community has developed over the years through protests and politics, parties and parades. Emergence Foundation organize each year the International Day Against Homophobia in Montreal to encourage gay and lesbian community organisations, unions, employers, private businesses, governments, public administration, professional associations, and all individuals seeking equality to get involved.

Why the 17th of May ?

May 17th is symbolic due to its significance in the improvement of the status of gays and lesbians. IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia) proposed this date for annually holding a day set aside to fight homophobia. In removing homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses on a May 17, the World Health Organisation (WHO) put an end to over a century of homophobia in the medical field.

How to participate ?

Raise the rainbow flag wherever there’s a flagpole, make a symbolic gesture to initiate a dialog with your entourage (at MyStudioMontreal.com we will all wear pink that day ;-) ), “come out” of the closet if you are gay or lesbian, teach your children respect and tolerance if you are parents…etc. And come visit the awesome Montreal’s Village !

Get ready for THE race…June 10 to 12 2011, the Grand Prix Du Canada (Formula One) is taking place in Montreal. On October 8, 1978, on the occasion of Montreal’s first Grand Prix du Canada, a native son wins his first world championship race. Ever since, every summer, tens of thousands of pilgrims have flocked to the island to watch the gods of motor racing. First there was Gilles Villeneuve. Then came Jones, Piquet, Mansell, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Hill, Alonso, Hamilton and others, who all came to triumph and keep building on the legend of this always-thrilling Grand Prix. This year, it’s your turn to come celebrate!

BOTA BOTA, SPA-SUR-L'EAU at Montreal Old port

Something got you feeling steamed? Then why not try steaming your stress away at Bota Bota, spa-sur-l’eau, an exciting spa concept and ode to all things aqua? Bota Bota puts a unique twist on the spa experience because it’s built in an old ferryboat docked at the Old Port.

So while you sweat it all out you’re also floating about, with 360° views of the magnificent St. Lawrence River, the quays and Montréal’s gorgeous skyline for your senses to absorb.

Bota Bota’s motto is Salus per aquam, or health by water. To get to you glowing, it offers Scandinavian-inspired treatments that include a water circuit, massage therapy, body and facial treatments and extra perks like Bota Chic, which treat you to manis, pedis and 10-digit scrubs. All of these invitations to elation can be enjoyed on one of five painstakingly-refurbished decks and includes time-out on the Sunshine Bridge, the Promenade Bridge and the Intermediate Bridge, where you can curl up in one of the former ferry’s giant portholes.

The architecture, redesign and visual identity of this ship-turned-avant-garde-centre-of-bliss is signed by Sid Lee and Sid Lee Architecture. Its minimalist, river-themed décor lets guests immerse themselves in the exoticism of an ultra-glam boat trip, while staying fastened to terra firma. Features like a cocktail bar-cum-pedicure-lounge, open-air whirlpool and a sub-aquatic change room are sure to keep pamper pusses coming back for more.

Sky Dinner for tonight

For people who love the thrill of dining out, Dinner in the Sky is hard to trump, by virtue of its towering magnitude. So if you’re looking to titillate your senses, tucking in to a meal high above ground will appeal to your thrill-seeking foodie nature.

Here’s the deal: as its name suggests, Dinner in the Sky is an airborne concept. In fact, you step not into, but onto your dining room; a giant floating platform hoisted by a crane a whopping 50 metres above ground (about the height of 9- or 10-storey building).

The kitchen, manned by 5 standing staff—1 supervisor, 1 chef, 2 waiters and 1 photographer—acts as the centrepiece, while a maximum of 22 guests make up the merry table border. They are belted into comfortable, ergonomic chairs that can swivel out 180° from the table, allowing guests to enjoy breath-taking vistas and the thrill of dangling their feet high in the sky, mid-air.

This dining concept already exists in cities worldwide, and for the first time it will be coming to Montréal’s Old Port from May 30 to June 7. Diners will be able to enjoy a full course meal and wine pairings while soaking up the stunning views of the city skyline and the sparkling St. Lawrence River.

If you’re celebrating a special event with friends or want to wow some VIPs, this airborne eating concept might be just the ticket to some very successful entertaining.

Welcome to Canada.

Happy Birthday Buona Notte

buona notte club

Vin et bonne bouffe, this is the way we like it.

Spectacle Quidam by le cirque du soleil…

quidam

The tip of the day :how to get from the airport to downtown…

bus 747

Dorval Airport or Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport Montreal is located on Montreal Island, some twenty kilometers from downtown Montreal. The ride is short, it takes more or less a half-hour or 20 minutes (depending on the hour, day of week and the ability of the driver).

First, there is the 747 Express Bus Line.

There is also a shuttle service linking major hotels and the airport of Montreal.

If you have just arrived in Montreal, tickets can be purchased at the airport ticket counter. Signs indicating that lead you to the ticket are clearly visible and the counter is very easy to find.

Downtown is the Central Station, located at 505 Boulevard De Maisonneuve Est (Berri-UQAM) that you buy your tickets.

The shuttle runs every 15 or 20 minutes, but there is a break from 2 o’clock until 7 o’clock in the morning (do not worry, there are no arrivals of aircraft at night).

The shuttle stops at some great hotels with Marriott Chateau, Delta Centre-Ville (you have to walk about 200 meters) and Fairmont Queen Elizabeth.

The cost is very affordable and if you buy a return ticket, it is still cheaper (expect about 25 Canadian dollars for round trip). You can use the return ticket for twelve months from the time of purchase.

Then we can use the STM bus (public transportation). The number 211 runs between the underground station Lionel – Groulx and Dorval train station (the ride lasts about 15 or 20 minutes). But at the Dorval train station, take the 204 to the airport (only 3 minutes, but it is difficult or impossible to cross any highway on foot. In addition, with regard to highways, no pedestrians to cross under the penalty of a heavy fine).

Taxis are relatively cheap. The rate is fixed and unique for the entire central area of Montreal. If you pay in U.S. dollars or euros, taxi drivers will accept the money but their contribution is really weird, so change forward. In any case, accept credit cards.

If you have several suitcases heavy and too large, do not worry: the price of taxi vans (mini-van) is the same and vans are numerous, generally it will take five or ten minutes to take a taxi.

Thanks to  Benoit de Globalrent

La meilleure Poutine de Montréal

Vladimir Poutine

Let’s go to Ladurée

Enjoy!

Le Boulevard Saint-Laurent

boulevard saint laurent st laurent

boulevard saint laurent st laurent

Le Plateau is the best to area to learn french.

  • l’universel, à l’angle du Boulevard René-Lévesque et de la rue Jeanne-Mance;
  • le standard, à l’angle des rues Saint-Hubert et Legendre (installé début décembre);
